America’s EV Market Hits 100,000 Registrations, but Demand Still Falls

Helen Hayward Sep 06, 2026

The U.S. electric vehicle market crossed the 100,000-registration mark again in June 2026, offering a small break from months of weaker demand. Still, the numbers show that the industry has not returned to growth.

EV registrations fell year over year for the ninth month in a row, with changes in federal incentives and stronger hybrid demand shaping buyer choices.

According to Automotive News, citing Mobility Global, U.S. EV registrations reached 100,515 in June, down 11% from the same month last year. It was the first month since the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired in September 2025 that registrations moved above 100,000.

The decline could benefit shoppers in another way. Automakers facing slower EV demand may continue offering discounts, financing deals, and other incentives to clear inventory.

At the same time, hybrids are attracting buyers who want better fuel economy without fully switching to an electric vehicle.

Tesla Keeps the Lead

Instagram | mymodelytesla | Tesla maintained massive U.S. EV dominance in June, capturing over 61% of all new registrations.

Tesla remained far ahead of other EV brands in June. The company recorded 61,813 registrations, an 8% increase from a year earlier. That gave Tesla a 61.5% share of all new EV registrations in the U.S.

The Model Y alone accounted for 42% of the market, making it the biggest contributor to Tesla’s strong position.

Rivian ranked second with 4,535 registrations, narrowly ahead of Hyundai. Its total declined 1.7% year over year, although commercial vans made up nearly half of its registrations. Commercial van registrations rose 43% to 2,061. Meanwhile, sales of the R1T and R1S were lower.

Rivian’s numbers could change as the R2 enters the market. Customer deliveries of the model began in June, and it is expected to become the company’s higher-volume vehicle.

Chevrolet followed with 4,094 registrations, down 57%. Hyundai recorded 4,011, down 23%, while Cadillac reached 3,931, a 4.6% decline.

Toyota was a notable exception. It registered 3,690 EVs, up 167% year over year. The increase partly reflects a low comparison base because the redesigned bZ, previously called the bZ4X, arrived during the second half of 2025. Toyota also added the C-HR EV to U.S. dealerships earlier this year.

Hybrids Gain Ground

Instagram | evcom | The U.S. EV market is finding its footing, though automaker caution points to a weak rebound.

The broader market suggests buyers are not abandoning electrified vehicles. Instead, many are choosing hybrids. California shows the shift clearly. During the first half of 2026, hybrids represented more than 22% of registrations in the state, compared with about 16% for EVs.

That change comes even as higher fuel prices increase interest in fully electric vehicles, showing that cost, convenience, incentives, and vehicle availability continue to influence purchasing decisions.

The June figures suggest that the U.S. EV market may be finding a floor after months of declines. However, a strong recovery does not appear close. Automakers remain cautious about putting more money into EV programs while demand is uneven.

The market’s next phase will likely depend on pricing, new models, consumer incentives, and how long hybrid demand remains strong. For now, crossing 100,000 registrations is encouraging, but the ninth consecutive annual decline shows that the EV slowdown is far from finished.
