Meet “Pioneer One,” the Solar-Electric Yacht Making Its Debut This Year

Helen Hayward Jul 05, 2026

The marine industry is preparing to welcome a new solar-electric vessel that places efficiency and long-range usability at the center of its design.

Developed by the newly established Pioneer Yachts, the PY60 is a 60-foot catamaran created specifically for electric propulsion rather than adapting an existing yacht platform.

The first model, named “Pioneer One,” is currently in the final phase of construction and is expected to launch in July before making its public debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 8 to 13.

A Purpose-Built Solar-Electric Yacht

Pioneer Yachts was founded earlier this year by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank with a clear objective: build a dependable solar-electric yacht capable of continuous operation at sea. Instead of modifying a traditional motor yacht, the company designed the PY60 from the ground up around energy generation, storage, and efficient propulsion.

The yacht uses a large solar roof to capture energy from the sun. That power is stored in onboard battery banks and supports both the electric propulsion system and onboard living requirements. According to Pioneer Yachts, the vessel’s 48-volt electrical architecture was developed to support long-term operation during extended time on the water.

While the company states that the catamaran can travel typical cruising distances using electric power alone, specific range figures have not been released. Diesel generators remain available when additional power is required.

Italian Styling with German Construction

The PY60 combines design expertise from Italy with German engineering and manufacturing. The exterior was created by Cossutti & Ganz, while Micheletti + Partners developed the interior spaces.

Every aspect of the hull and superstructure was engineered to complement the propulsion system. The design helps reduce energy consumption while also improving comfort and overall performance. The catamaran reaches a top speed of 11 knots and cruises comfortably at 7.5 knots, offering quiet operation with minimal emissions.

Another notable feature is its simplified onboard systems. Combined with intuitive controls, the setup allows owners to operate the yacht themselves, reducing dependence on a professional crew.

Interior Designed for Open Living

The interior focuses on space, visibility, and easy movement. According to Pioneer Yachts, the PY60 includes the largest cockpit door in its class. The door connects the aft deck directly to the salon and creates a more open living area.

Large panoramic windows surround the main living space. These windows bring in natural light and provide wide views of the water. The single-level layout also makes the interior feel more connected and practical.

What Comes Next for “Pioneer One”?

Beyond serving as the company’s flagship vessel, “Pioneer One” will act as a real-world testing platform. Mike Frank explained the strategy in a statement:

“Pioneer One will be more than a showcase yacht; it will become our operational reference platform. By using the yacht ourselves and monitoring its performance under real conditions, we can continue refining the concept and ensure that future boats are shaped by practical experience.”

The company plans to study the yacht’s performance during real-world operation. Those findings will help guide future developments within the Pioneer Yachts range.

The PY60 takes a practical approach to solar-electric boating. Pioneer Yachts designed every major system around energy efficiency and everyday usability.

The catamaran combines German engineering, Italian design, solar-generated power, and owner-friendly operation in one package. Its appearance at the Cannes Yachting Festival will provide the first detailed look at this new approach to electric cruising.
